Mould Making and Casting Glass: Open Studio Access

March 18 - March 19

Casting Studio Access

Casting glass at home can be a challenge—it’s messy, requires specialised equipment, and demands a well-ventilated space. To make things easier, we’re introducing open-access studio sessions designed for independent glass casters. These sessions provide access to our facilities on a casual, flexible basis, allowing you to work on your own projects without the hassle of setting up at home. Held on two consecutive days each month, you can choose to join one, both, or skip a month if needed. It’s a great way to stay productive, experiment, and refine your casting skills in a supportive studio environment.

Mould Making and Casting Glass:

Open Studio Access

These unique open studio sessions offer access to specialised mould-making and glass casting equipment for experienced participants. Designed for students who have previously completed a casting workshop at Blue Dog Glass, this program provides an opportunity to work independently on your projects with minimal guidance.Included Facilities, Tools & Materials:

  • Mould-Making Area: Equipped for a variety of techniques.
  • Materials: Plaster, silica, grog, and fiberglass.
  • Tools: Wax tools, a wax melter, retaining boards for mould making, and a wax steamer.
  • Cold-Working Equipment: Linisher, Sandblaster, lathe, diamond flatbed, pneumatic engraver, flat lap stations, diamond saw and pneumatic grinder (outside tool, weather permitting).
Please Note:
  • Consumables Not Included: You’ll need to bring or purchase items such as flowerpots, ceramic fibre, silicone rubbers, wax, diamond pads for pneumatic grinder, vermiculite board, glass and clay. (Recycled clay will be available for mould-making purposes.)
  • Firings Are Not Included: Kiln access requires a separate booking.

Expectations and Structure:

This is not a traditional teaching class but rather an open studio environment for independent exploration. Participants are encouraged to undertake any aspect of glass casting, such as:

  • Creating wax models
  • Crafting master silicone moulds
  • Making refractory moulds as either lost wax or open face casting
  • Steaming moulds
  • Coldworking finished pieces

The studio and equipment will be shared with up to four participants, so flexibility and a collaborative spirit are essential. If you need exclusive access to specific tools, such as cold-working equipment, we recommend booking a private session. These sessions are for cast glass processes only.

Application Process:
These sessions are by application only, ensuring that all participants meet the experience requirements and can fully benefit from the facilities provided. To apply or find out if this class is suitable, please email  info@bluedogglass.com.au

Only 4 people each session.
