Wafers are slivers of powder that are lightly fused to make a wide range of unique design elements. In this three-session masterclass you will explore three main styles of wafers. The first involves using stencils to create patterns which can be used either as intact designs or separated into individual components. With this technique, it is also possible to use tools to achieve painterly effects. The second style transforms gradational powder hues into colour fields that can be incorporated into sheet glass which can then be cut and assembled into colourful designs. The third style examines a print method that combines designs carved into linoleum sheets that are transferred onto powder. This “impression” wafer is then hand coloured using glass powders, enamels, and micas. Bob outlines processes to avoid problems associated with making wafers that he has learned from over 30 years of design experience. Why use wafers? They are simple to make. They use minimal materials. They encourage spontaneity. They offer a wide range of design possibilities. Each one is unique. In other words, they offer a whole new approach to designing with kilnformed glass powders.
We have all become familiar with how Zoom classes work, you watch the live demo then head off into your studio to make the pieces. This is an excellent method of learning but this doesn’t suit everyone, so we came up with a twist, this is where the hybrid comes in. We are offering 6 places at our studio where students can join the Zoom session with Amanda on our large screen TV. Students will have all the benefits of being able to ask questions and will have access to the video and Facebook group. Each week when Bob has finished his demo and talks we will turn the TV off and students will be guided by Blue Dog Staff to complete the projects. For these 6 all materials and firings are included in the price.
How the class is delivered:
We will use the zoom platform to present this live masterclass. Each week Bob will guide you through the processes with a tutorial and demonstrations, students will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the class. Bob will share everything you need to know to get started including firing schedules in Celsius.
The class will be recorded by Blue Dog and made available to students for 2 weeks after the class has concluded. We ask that you do not tape or share these sessions, this is how Bob makes his living.
Approximately a week prior to the class starting students will be sent a Zoom link and password. If you are new to Zoom we recommend you take some time to get to know the platform, it’s really very easy. Students will need a computer with a camera, microphone and good internet.
Students will also join Bob and Blue Dog in our closed Facebook group where images and results can be shared and questions can be bounced around, this is a great way to meet other glass enthusiasts. The Facebook group will remain open until one week after the last session.
For those students who elect to do the workshop at Blue Dog, we will watch Bob’s demos on the large TV, a coffee in one hand and a cake in the other. At the completion of the class we will make the samples ready for review the following week, lead by Blue Dog Glass staff.
What do you need:
Along with your computer you will need a range of materials and tools to do this workshop. For a full list of what you need please click here. For those students attending the class at Blue Dog Glass you will only need your basic PPE and glass cutter, everything else is included in the class fee.
