Take a deep drive into the world of glass casting and learn all the secrets of lost wax casting. Our comprehensive Lost Wax Casting workshop, the most extensive casting class offered at Blue Dog. It will introduce a wide range of techniques and approaches to using wax to create complex forms. Topics covered in this class will include:

• Sculpting wax, learning how to attach and finish wax pieces.
• Pouring multiple wax components in moulds
• considering alternative materials for texture such as natural materials and fabrics
• Making a two part plaster mould for multiple wax pours
• Making a silicon rubber positive
• Making a silicon rubber master positive to make duplicate refractory moulds
• Colour blending of glass
• Making handbuild refractory moulds
• Making single pour refractory moulds
• Steaming moulds
• Calculating volumes of glass
• Preparing a crucible
• Loading casts into the kiln
• Cold working
• Firing schedules
• Oh&S

Lost wax an extremely versatile process, enabling you to make almost limitless solid glass forms. Students will learn how to make suitable refractory moulds over a wax model. The wax is then removed – or ‘lost’ – to create a cavity, which is then filled with molten glass.

In this intensive eight-day course you’ll be stepped through each part of the casting process. Students will make:

• 2 or 3 finished pieces, depending on size and their work pace
• 5 cast glass colour tests
• A master 2 part plaster mould for future wax positives
• A silicon rubber master positive for making future tests

This class is suitable for those who have never cast glass before or for those with some experience and would like to consolidate their knowledge.

All mould materials are included in the course. However students will need to purchase suitable glass for their project (costing from approx. $120+ depending on project size).

Class dates: 25^th, 26^th, 27^th, 28^th Nov 30^th, 1^st 2^nd and 3^rd Dec. Please note there is a break day on Friday 29^th November. Class will run from 10- 4.30 each day except on Tuesday 3^rd when the class will finish at 2pm.
