Have you wanted to take your vessel form to the next scale, or make alternative shapes or get more detail into your sheet glass designs? Ideal for beginners to move on and start making larger scale pieces with some guidance or for those wanting to make the most of a smaller kiln.
In this course hosted by Blue Dog Glass, students will learn to create larger scale vessels using Bullseye opal and transparent sheet glass through your own custom made vermiculite mould. We will experiment with colours to create new tones and colour blending. Amanda will teach how to make your own mould larger than commercially available moulds (or to fit your kiln size). She will explain how she builds the flat blanks, taking into consideration mass, heat, time, colour and opacity and we will investigate ways of designing component parts with engraving or powder designs to add to your blank.
We will discuss different forms that can be achieved with large aperture forms depending on your kiln and the best approach to aperture design that enables easier coldworking.
All firing schedules will be explained and help available to adapt to your own kiln for custom projects.
We will look at all the ways to cold work your glass vessel to finish it such as cutting, grinding, hand lapping, engraving and sandblasting; all techniques that continue the creative design process in changing the form of the piece to give the vessel an identity, whilst giving it stability. It is possible to do this without having coldworking machinery and Amanda will cover hand alternatives.
A set of notes covering all projects covered in the 3 week course will be provided plus support from Amanda throughout the course.
Class will run over 3 consecutive Wednesday afternoons 4pm -5.30pm (students participating in the hybrid class will contin
ue on until 7.30) AEST Melbourne 3rd, 10th and 17th May
About the instructor:
Amanda Simmons received a Postgraduate Certificate in Glass and Architecture from Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design in London. In 2005, she relocated to Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, where she currently lives and works. Amanda makes kiln formed glass vessels, playing with gravity in the kiln. Manipulating mass, heat, colour and time she aims to create complex, elusive work that has intense colour and pattern which reacts to the light it is placed in. The pieces are finished using many cold working processes to shape and mark the glass including sandblasting, hand lapping, diamond point and wheel cameo engraving.
How our online hybrid classes work:
We have all become familiar with how Zoom classes work, you watch the live demo then head off into your studio to make the pieces. This is an excellent method of learning but this doesn’t suit everyone, so we came up with a twist, this is where the hybrid comes in. We are offering 6 places at our studio where students can join the Zoom session with Amanda on our large screen TV. Students will have all the benefits of being able to ask questions and will have access to the video and Facebook group. Each week when Amanda has finished her demo and talks we will turn the TV off and students will be guided by Blue Dog Staff to complete the projects. For these 6 all materials and firings are included in the price.
How the class is delivered:
We will use the zoom platform to present this live masterclass. Each week Amanda will guide you through the processes with a tutorial and demonstrations, students will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the class. Amanda will share everything you need to know to get started including firing schedules in Celsius.
The class will be recorded by Blue Dog and made available to students for 2 weeks after the class has concluded. We ask that you do not tape or share these sessions, this is how Amanda makes her living.
Approximately a week prior to the class starting students will be sent a Zoom link and password. If you are new to Zoom we recommend you take some time to get to know the platform, it’s really very easy. Students will need a computer with a camera, microphone and good internet.
Students will also join Amanda and Blue Dog in our closed Facebook group where images and results can be shared and questions can be bounced around, this is a great way to meet other glass enthusiasts. The Facebook group will remain open until one week after the last session.
For those students who elect to do the workshop at Blue Dog, we will watch Amanda’s demos on the large TV, a coffee in one hand and a cake in the other. At the completion of the class we will make the samples ready for review the following week, lead by Blue Dog Glass staff.
What do you need:
Along with your computer you will need a range of materials and tools to do this workshop. Click here for material list. For those students attending the class at Blue Dog Glass you will only need your basic PPE and glass cutter, everything else is included in the class fee.
