In this comprehensive class we will explore new ways to create components for projects using segments of glass constructed using pattern bars. In a nutshell pattern bars are slabs of glass that have been fused together, then cut into thin tiles and refused into larger projects. Pattern bars can be very strong repetitive patterns or more free formed organic looking. In this workshop we will work with 3 distinctly different methods of production: A strong repetitive pattern using strips of glass, a random free formed pattern bar and a pattern bar made of frit.
Techniques covered in class:
- Strip cutting
- Creating a repetitive pattern
- Colour selection and incorporating reactions
- Constructing a dam for firing pattern bars
- Using a metal mould for creating pattern bars
- Designing a free form pattern bar
- Creating a frit pattern bar
- Using the diamond saw
- Using a sandblaster
- Using linisher
- Using hand polish tools for clean up
- Preparing you cut tiles for refusing
- Firing schedules
- Trouble shooting
